Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh of Jaipur. It was designed by architect Lal Chand Ustad.
The palace was constructed as an extension of the City Palace so that royal women could observe street festivals and daily life without being seen, following the purdah system.
